Writing tips: When is exclusivity a bad thing?

Here’s a quick writing tip to improve your content right away.

Avoid words that unintentionally exclude.

Words like citizencrazy or Chairman can all exclude people you may not mean to exclude – in these examples, based on citizenship status, mental health and gender.

Be aware of words that exclude people based on age, disability, belief, political party, region, income, etc.

When you spot a word that may be exclusionary because it is overly specific (like citizen or Chairman), consider whether a broader alternative (like someone or Chairperson) is more accurate.

When you spot a word that is overly broad or is potentially discriminatory (like crazy), consider whether a more specific alternative (like diagnosed with a mental health condition) is more accurate.
